MYTH #1: Veneers make your breath smell. Veneers themselves should not cause bad breath. If someone with veneers is experiencing persistent odor, the concern is usually what’s happening around or underneath the restoration, for example, plaque buildup, gum inflammation, decay, or an issue with how a restoration fits.
Properly designed veneers still need to be brushed, flossed, and professionally maintained just like natural teeth.
MYTH #2: They shave your teeth down to tiny pegs. Those dramatic “shark teeth” videos you see online often show crown preparations, not typical veneer preparations.
Veneers cover primarily the front surface of the tooth, and preparation can be much more conservative depending on the individual case.
MYTH #3: Veneers always look fake. They shouldn’t. Great veneers aren’t necessarily perfectly white, perfectly symmetrical, or completely opaque. Natural teeth have texture, translucency, and subtle variation.
The goal is for people to notice your smile, not your dental work.
MYTH #4: You can’t get cavities once you have veneers. Your natural tooth is still
underneath and around the veneer, so you can still develop decay.
Veneers don’t eliminate the need to brush, clean between your teeth, or have regular dental exams.
MYTH #5: Veneers last forever. Veneers can last for many years when they’re well designed and properly cared for, but they aren’t necessarily a lifetime treatment.
They can possibly chip, wear, debond, or eventually need replacement.
Good veneers should look natural, function properly, and still require you to take care of your teeth.
